"The calligrapher’s intention is not primarily to produce an image. The calligrapher – or, at least, in how I conceive of him – produces an intention. The image that appears on the paper is its visible articulation… Working from a live-model sketch is about more than the artist’s observational ability and mastery of representation in space; it is a matter of intermediation between the person presenting themselves to the other and the person observing the other."
